      Morning assembly activities

I have to do a 5 to 10 minute morning assembly English language activity for the whole school, so I have to think of something suitable for M1 to M6 students, some with little or no English ability, some quite good, but mainly probably not so good. Any ideas?

      TIA

a quiz? have some students read out the clues and give a candy to everyone who comes to see you during that day to tell you the correct answer.

      Re: Morning assembly activities

I was asked to do the same thing every Monday, first time no one even looked up from what they were doing, so, I decided to do a 30 minute radio type show through the school intercom system using English music and Interviews. Now the students are starting to get involved. And I am enjoying it

Yep, I have to do that in a few mins from now ...Tues is my day. I have a mandatory 'word of the day' thing that the big boss imposed .... so I have turned this into an ongoing story ... a space adventure .... going from one place to the next each week and introducing words as the weeks go on .... as Po does too, candy for the guesses and I put lots of extra Q's in there to get em guessing.

      Re: Morning assembly activities

I have to do the same thing for about 500 students between 12 and 18 and veeery different language levels. In the beginning they alsways told me on very short notice and I almost always came up with something sponanously - which is really not that clever, because halfway through the activity I got insecure and felt like I had no idea what I was doing. So I started planning the whole thing out. Now I usually know a few days before and I get some students to do it. So they have one or two days to practice what they will have to say and then they manage the whole activity by themselves and I stand back and watch proudly.
But sometimes - like today - they tell me just the evening before and so I have no toime to practice with my students. Then I do something like a physical warm-up: "Put your right hand up, put your left hadn up", put your right hand down" and so on. And even if they don't understand at first, if I do the same thing they are supposed to do they usually remember the moves and hopefully connect them to the language they hear.
Once I did a short rap. Had them repeat everything I said, then divided into boys and girls and then I just clapped my hands and they rapped away. They loved it :)
For tomorrow though I have no idea yet. Maybe I will read a short (very short!) description of somebody and have one question for every level. So to make sure, that somebody from M1 gets the chance to answer and so on. I will ask the questions in their native language though. And here it's important to tell them first, that there will be questions, it makes them listen.

      Re: Morning assembly activities

Thanks for all your responses so far. Food for thought. I like the idea of a quiz. I have no time now to get students involved so I can do the quiz by myself.

No assembly hall. It will be outside in the playground with students sitting in rows on the ground. I would guess there will be over 2000 students.

you could try a song with actions. but that's bloody risky with older primary and matayoum as they might just stand there and watch you burn...

      Re: Morning assembly activities

That's a good idea, too. I could do a song AND a quiz. Just to pad it out a bit, of course.
