re: TCT Provisional Teaching Permit/ Waiver Requirements As Of 1 February 2012

how does this work exactly? do they just check your degree against a database of colleges / universities and if the institution on your diploma is on the list it is OK? or do they verify that you actually attended and graduated?

In the states, there is an online resource that allows you to search a database by ID number. you fill in university name, dob, social security number and graduating year. the result verifies the information on the diploma. if your diploma is fake it is useless. a single search is just 6 usd. however, i do not know that system deals with international degrees. nor do i know how it deals with any of the issues raised here. however, it seems to be by far more efficient than what is used here.

I think this is currently the procedure when applying for a provisional teaching permit.

or do they verify that you actually attended and graduated?
AFAIK this is happening when applying for the actual teacher license.

did you sign a consent form?
To verify in the UK they must use one of the UK companies that is allowed to check. I tried to talk to my Uni a few years back and they refused to talk to me because I was on an international number, even though I could answer their questions, took me over 6 months to get a replacement cert because I was not there to receive it. I doubt if any Uni in the UK would talk to a Thai no matter who they said they were.
Imagine an official from here calling a UK uni. Ello, I Mr Somchai here from krusapa, you tell me Mr david 123 he do degree with you no? (phone put down) ello, ello, where you go?

could be interesting if they do try and verify all degrees

Yes, but a lot don't, I know my UNI does not. also those of us who did their degree 25+ years ago find the UNI has moved or gone, making it difficult to get verification, it took me a lot of time and effort to get a letter of verification from my UNI.
But hey TIT so I doubt they would even know how to go about checking for real

that opens a lot of scary possibilities. if some sort of national id is not required (and no thai entity should EVER be privy to such information) then find a somebody with your name and where they graduated from (from Linkd-in or similar website) do a persons search, get their DOB go to the nearest thai-copy specialist and bingo you are good to go. when giving the info for the search, just use the dob for whomever you share a name with, and i can almost guarantee they will be none the wiser. That should be much more scary than having teachers hop off at KSR and getting a 500 baht dip.

yeah for sure. and if that person gets involved with illegal ac tivities it could cause the other person a whole lot of headaches if they ever ventured into Thailand..

Yes, but a lot don't, I know my UNI does not.
      Nor does mine.

For the UK the Data Protection Act 1998 which is in line with the Data Protection Directive (EU) applies. These acts prohibit organisations to give out information of persons without their prior permission.
