wtf Grolier Talking Books (English) - anybody heard of these and are they any good?

Been visited by a Grolier rep today. The guy wanted to present Talking English (books), which he maintained were the best thing around to learn English. Right.

The demo went off very well and he used a "reading pen" which 'spoke' whatever word or paragraph he pointed at in the books - very impressive.

Then comes the sales glitz and I can have a set of 20 books and a reading pen for around 11K baht. Thanks, but no thanks. I told him I'd have to think about it first and then consult the school - even though it's the boss of the school who's actually arranged this meeting (cos her grandson goes in kindergarten and she thought it'd be great if he could hear the books talking to him!).

My own immediate opinion was, that the product was probably decent enough for "home study" for a Thai kid, but I honestly couldn't see what good it'd be in a noisy classroom - and I'm quite capable of pronouncing the exact same words for free, that would otherwise cost a whole bunch of money.

Still, I'd be interested to hear if any of you guys know - or have used this product. Strangely enough, I haven't yet been able to find the product anywhere on the net.....

I dunno if they were from this company but have used similar things. not really needed in the classroom bu would be great for parents to buy and use at home.
